Living Above the City

Steiltes occupies the elevated hillsides south of central Mbombela, where established homes, mature gardens and natural granite formations create a distinctly Lowveld setting.

The suburb is immediately recognisable by the enormous black-and-white soccer ball reservoir on the hillside — a landmark visible from large parts of the city. Originally built as part of Nelspruit’s water infrastructure, the unusual reservoir was later painted to resemble a football and has become one of Mbombela’s best-known visual landmarks.

But living in Steiltes is about much more than the landmark.

The elevation gives many properties impressive views across Mbombela and the surrounding Lowveld, while the suburb’s older trees and established gardens create a quieter, greener atmosphere than many newer residential developments.

One of the most unusual things about Steiltes is its street names.

Astronomy, space exploration and the night sky appear throughout the suburb, giving Steiltes a naming tradition unlike almost anywhere else in Mbombela.

In the older streets you will find names such as Aurora Drive, Cosmos Avenue, Melkweg Road, Suiderkruis Street, Shuttle Street, Taurus Street and Star Crescent.

The theme continues through many of the suburb’s individual residential pockets and complexes.

Colfin Park has Orion Street, while Heldersig has Ster Crescent. Henkrin Park contributes Galaxy Street and Valley View has Komeet Street.

In Berg ’n Bos, the theme continues with Satellite, Libra and Eclipse, while Op Die Berg includes Stratos Street.

Tussenberge has some of the most evocative names of all, including Moonlight, Star Gaze, Sunbeam and Rainbow, together with Mercury Street.

Then there is Pekan Park, where the street names go properly planetary with Venus, Mars and Jupiter.

Taken together, Steiltes reads almost like a map of the night sky.

It is also useful local knowledge. Mention “the planet streets”, “up by the soccer ball”, “Valley View” or “Tussenberge” to someone who knows Steiltes well and they will usually know exactly which part of the hillside you mean.

Steiltes and Nelspruit Ext 14

Property searches in Steiltes can sometimes be confusing because not every neighbourhood locals consider part of greater Steiltes is necessarily recorded under the same formal suburb name.

Pekan Park, for example, may appear in property records and online searches as Nelspruit Ext 14, despite being commonly regarded as part of the wider Steiltes area.

The same principle applies to several named complexes and residential pockets within the suburb.

For buyers, this means it can be worthwhile searching beyond “Steiltes” alone. A property only a few streets away may be marketed or recorded under a different extension or complex name while still offering essentially the same Steiltes lifestyle.

This is where genuine local knowledge becomes particularly valuable.

Steiltes offers far more variety than its reputation as an established upmarket suburb might suggest.

Buyers can find large freestanding family homes with mature gardens, character properties built around natural granite outcrops, renovated older homes, contemporary residences, townhouses and homes within secure complexes and estates.

The hillside setting also means every property needs to be considered individually.

A few hundred metres can make a significant difference to views, gradient, driveway access, orientation, afternoon sun, privacy and the relationship between neighbouring properties.

For hillside properties in particular, buyers should pay attention to retaining structures, stormwater management, accessibility and the position of surrounding stands.

The reward is that the right property can offer something difficult to recreate elsewhere: a combination of established suburban living and exceptional elevation over the city.

Shopping and Everyday Convenience

Residents have convenient access to Steiltes Shopping Centre, which provides neighbourhood shopping and everyday services without needing to travel into central Mbombela for every errand.

Steiltes is connected to the wider city through routes including Ferreira Street and Dr Enos Mabuza Drive, providing access towards the Mbombela CBD, West Acres and other major parts of the city.

The suburb remains predominantly residential, which is an important part of its appeal.

A lesser-known feature of the suburb is the Steiltes Nature Reserve, accessed from the Melkweg Road area.

The reserve protects a pocket of natural Lowveld vegetation around one of the suburb’s granite koppies and includes informal walking trails, woodland, rocky terrain and elevated viewpoints.

More than 150 bird species have been recorded in the reserve, making it an unexpected neighbourhood attraction for walkers, birders and residents who enjoy having a piece of natural Lowveld landscape close to home.
